Structure and Content
Students develop practical skills that can be used in modern laboratories and develop an understanding of fundamental scientific principles with a focus on human physiology and genetics. In addition, students also develop a range of skills and techniques, personal qualities and attributes essential for successful performance and growth in their working life.
Note – students must have grade 5 in English, maths and science due to the nature of the content and skills needed throughout the course.
Compulsory units
Year 1
Unit 1 – Principles and Applications of Science 1 – assessed externally by exam.
Unit 2 – Practical Scientific Procedures and Techniques – assessed internally by coursework.
Unit 3 – Science Investigation Skill – assessed externally by a Pearson/Edexcel set task.
Unit 8 – Physiology of Human Body Systems – assessed internally by coursework.
Additional units will be offered to pupils who qualify for the Diploma (2 A-levels).
Year 2
Unit 4 – Laboratory Techniques and their Applications – assessed internally by coursework.
Unit 5 – Principles and Applications of Science 2 – assessed externally by exam.
Unit 6 – Investigative Project – assessed internally by coursework.
Unit 12 – Diseases and Infection – assessed internally by coursework.
