Students on the sports academy programme can study one of the following two BTEC Sport Level 3 qualifications.
The pathway students choose is determined by GCSE results achieved at the end of Year 11. Currently, there are two pathways students can study.
Pathway A – BTEC Level 3 National Extended Diploma in Sport (NQF) 2016
Content and structure
The course is equivalent to three A-levels and includes 14 units, of which 10 are mandatory and 4 are external.

Anatomy and Physiology (exam)
Development and Provision of Sport and Physical Activity (controlled assessment exam)
Investigating Business in Sport and the Active Leisure Industry (controlled assessment exam)
Year 1 Coursework and practical units
Sports Leadership (including Primary Festivals, Primary Sports Days and AMA Sports Day) Professional Development in Sport unit
Research Methods in Sport unit
Research Project in Sport unit
Practical Sports Performance
Year two External Exams
Fitness Training and Programming in Sport (controlled assessment exam)
Year two Coursework and practical units
Skill Acquisition in Sport unit

Rules, Regulations and Officiating in Sport

Assessment
Units comprise three controlled assessments and one exam-based unit. Other units are coursework and practically assessed including organising events in sport and physical activities (including Primary Festivals, Primary Sports Days and AMA Sports Day).
Pathway B – BTEC Level 3 National Extended Diploma in Sport (RQF) 2020
This course is equivalent to 3 A Levels and it includes; 12 units in total. 7 are mandatory and 5 are optional
